Jag har nu befunnit mig i Banjul eller i grannbyn Sukuta i Gambia i en vecka. En kort redogörelse över min cykeltur från St Louise:
Något ovanligt hände strax utanför St Louise – jag fick punktering. Den första på 1105 mil. Strax efter hände något ännu mer ovanligt – jag fick punktering igen. Den första berodde på en spik och den andra på en tagg från ett acaciaträd, eller kanske från någon lika taggig kusin till det. Välkommen till Sahel – det taggigaste området i världen.
Efter våra lagningar (jo, Helen fick punktering hon med) slog vi läger efter bara 3 mil. Dagen efter cyklade vi fram till Touba – Senegals näst största stad och tillika det heliga sätet för den islamiska grenen muridism. Vi stannade lagom länge för att ta några bilder på den berömda moskén – en av de största på kontinenten.
Vi fortsatte vårat trampande över den senegalesiska savannen och varje dag såg vi massor av savannens djur. Framför allt getter. Men även kor och hönor var vanliga. Träden var intressantare – särskillt baobab trädet som är en av Afrikas verkliga symboler. Den berömda polska korren Ryszard Kapuscinski skrev en gång: ”Like elephants among other animals, so are baobabs among trees: they have no equals”. Trädet får mig att bli glad och det är svårt att cykla förbi ett av dem utan att stanna ett slag. De utstrålar samma beslutsamhet som mycket gamla ekar kan göra hemma i Sverige. Samtidigt har trädet fått mig att inse att jag verkligen måste vandra (eller cykla) Avenue of the Baobabs på Madagascar någon gång i framtiden. (Googla för bilder!)
Vi valde att lämna asfalten för ett par dagar och sökte oss till de minsta vägarna på vår kartor. De som visas som – - – - – - – istället för feta röda eller gula sträck. Jag visste vad som väntade, men för Helen var det första gången på sandiga afrikanska pister. Sanden besegrade oss naturligtvis så vi fick ofta leda våra cyklar över vissa partier. Ibland var det lättare att cykla bredvid vägen och då plöjde vi genom knähöga hav av brungröna växter. En gång hamnade vi av misstag till och med i ett majsfält där de glesa och torra växterna gick över huvudet på oss. Vi kom en aning vilse i bushen och fick stanna i en by och fråga efter riktning. Efter vägen gick det ju inte att fråga, eftersom vi inte cyklade på någon som kan kallas väg.
Barnen älskar oss. Eller också älskar de bara att ropa toubab efter oss. (vit person, typ). Ibland ekar hela byar av ”toubab, toubab”. I Senegal och Gambia är det alltså toubab som gäller. I Sudan ropar barnen Khawaja, i Etiopien Faranji i och i swahiliområdena är det naturligtvis ”mzungu” som ekar i dalarna när man rullar förbi. Jag har aldrig förstått denna besatthet av hudfärg som man ofta upplever i Afrika. Men jag brukar ropa tillbaka ”black boy” eller ”black girl” vilket får barnen att rynka på sina ögonbryn men får deras föräldrar att gapskratta – om de förstår min engelska. Cirkusen kan vara rolig men är ibland påfrestande. När saker upprepar sig tusentals gånger blir det snart just påfrestande. Men som tur är så lämnar jag snart toubabområdet och kommer in i ett annat språkområde vilket innebär att jag kommer att få höra ett helt nytt ord varje gång en icke-stum människa under 15 år för syn på mig. Jag underar vad det kommer att bli i Guinea-Bissau?
I Gambia blev vi rymlingar. Ni måste ha visum, sa vakten.
Nej det måste vi inte alls, sa vi. Vi behöver bara en stämpel.
Nej, sa vakten. Ni måste ha visum. Men eftersom det är Tabiski så är visumkontoret stängt. Men om ni ger mig pengarna så…. , fortsatte vakten.
Jag log. Särskillt inombords. Han hade ju redan stämplat våra pass och givit dem till oss. Nu satt han bara och väntade på mutan.
Okej, sa jag. Du ska få dina pengar. Vi har dem i våra cykelväskor. Vänta en minut.
Vakten nickade glatt. Kanske tänkte han på ölen som han skulle köpa för våra pengar efter jobbet.
Jag drog med Helen ut till våra cyklar och sa till henne att nu cyklar vi fort som fan iväg.
Men den röda sandvägen hindrade oss och vi fnittrade så mycket åt vår rymning, så det gick nog inte så fort. Jag vände ofta på huvudet för att se om vakten kom efter oss. Men det gjorde han inte
Här i Gambia cyklade vi genom våtmarker där vi stannade och beundrade fåglar. Vi såg krabbor, decimeterstora varelser som går på snedd. De försvann snabbt ner i sina fuktiga hålar när de upptäckte min kameralins. Ifrån Barra tog vi en färja över Gambiafloden till Banjul.
Här i huvudstadsområdet har det mesta handlat om att skaffa visum. Det lyckades till slut. Imorgon cyklar jag vidare.

Känner igen det där med ”mzungu” från vår resa i Kenya och Tanzania. Vi reste med en del lokalbussar där vi var de enda vita, så vi fick en del uppmärksamhet från ungarna… Fast vi hade nog en känsla av att intresset, åtminstone till viss del, hängde ihop med att de antog att ”mzungu” har pengar och alltså gärna skulle vilja köpa nåt av det de hade att sälja…
